10 years Bologna Process: Report of failure

(Original: 10 years of the Bologna Process: A more or less great failure )

Next week, on Tuesday and Wednesday to meet the Minister of Education 46 European countries, EU Commissioner Jan Figel , and other representatives of international and European organizations, such as the € of Europe, UNESCO, the European Students Union (ESU) to celebrate in Leuven (Belgium) for 10 years Bologna Process .

This process was then started to make studying in Europe, comparable, reliable and transparent. For some it was seen as a way to reduce the period of study so that young people would come quickly to the labor market. And the most important goal was to increase the mobility of students, while studying and between the three newly introduced (Bachelor's, Master's, doctorate studies).

are in principle all of these goals worthy of support, and so the process would have the situation of students and scientists / researchers across Europe to improve.

But apart from some superficial changes failed process.

Member States do not have it taken seriously enough. University leaders have used it to introduce structures which serve their organizational interests more than the best interests of mobile students. The coordination was poor, and so is studying in Europe today is not comparable as they were 10 years ago.

The European Students Union (ESU, formerly ESIB), probably has one of the most competent actors in this context that in its press release to 2009-he made edition of its report " Bologna from a student perspective " very clear:
"Although were made progress in introducing "structural" reforms such as the three-cycle (Bachelor, Master, PhD degree), but substantive reforms in terms of mobility, social dimension and the involvement of students, largely ignored, which leaves a massive gap in the core of the process.

The report shows that European students, 10 years after the introduction of the process still find huge hurdles, for example, by socio-economic conditions, family situation and gender issues that they are not recognized as equal partners in the academic and administrative structures, and that they are largely unable to it of the ability to be mobile, make use of to "
And it continues:
. That is, the Bologna process is in jeopardy, as a superficial reform of the European higher education structures to highlight, and non-academic as a logical paradigm Education . The ESU
In its report, however, that small in some areas at least Progress has been made and no one has to paint everything black.

But it remains clear that the core elements of the reform in Europe were still never really taken seriously.

The 10th Anniversary of the Bologna process is therefore not the right time to celebrate, but rather should be used as an opportunity to reflect on what all went wrong, and how the ideas - and ideals - from Bologna perhaps still can save.
